4 Ways to Stay Safe Walking and Biking in the Community
Whether heading to school, the park, or a friend’s house, walking and biking are great ways for kids and families to stay active, explore their neighborhood, and enjoy the outdoors. But safety should always come first! Here are four simple ways to make every trip safer and more enjoyable.

1. Be Visible
Visibility is key—especially during early mornings or evenings. Wear bright clothing, use reflective gear, and consider carrying a flashlight or using a light when biking. The more visible you are, the easier it is for drivers to see you and give you space.

2. Be Alert
Being alert is your best defense on the journey to school and around your community. Keep your eyes up, stay off your phone, and listen for traffic. Remember to look left, right, and left again before crossing the street. Staying aware helps everyone spot potential hazards early and react safely.

3. Be Predictable
Predictable movement helps drivers and other road users understand what you’ll do next. Pedestrians should always use crosswalks and follow traffic signals. Cyclists should signal their turns, ride in designated bike lanes, and avoid weaving between parked cars. Clear, consistent actions make everyone’s journey safer.

4. Be Knowledgeable
Feel empowered by learning the rules of the road. Pedestrians should know where and when it’s safe to cross. Cyclists should understand traffic laws and regularly check their bikes—tires, brakes, and chains—to make sure they’re in good condition. Knowledge builds confidence and keeps your ride smooth and safe.
By being alert, visible, predictable, and knowledgeable, everyone can make walking and biking a fun, healthy, and safe part of everyday life. Let’s make safety our top priority every step—and pedal—of the way! 🚶♀️🚴♂️✨
